If you have a job that requires you to work on a construction site, one thing that’s likely always on your radar is your own personal safety. And while it might feel like injuries are things that happen to the unlucky, there are plenty of ways that you can protect yourself from injuries and reduce your chances of getting hurt while on the job, especially when you’re new to construction sites.

To help you see how this can be done, here are three things you can do to stay safe when working a construction job.

Make Communication Part Of Your Culture

On all construction sites, one of the best things that you can do to stay safe is to make sure that you and everyone that you’re working with makes communication a part of your culture.

One of the biggest reasons why people get hurt on job sites is due to a lack of communication, especially when something dangerous is going to be happening around them. But by making it a habit to communicate with everyone when something is going to be taking place or something more dangerous will be happening. This includes things like turning the power on and off, moving large loads of reinforcing steel or other materials, or having someone go up high in the air.

Avoid Running On Autopilot

With more time and experience, it’s common to move faster and more efficiently when on a construction job site. However, this can also result in your operating on autopilot, which can be dangerous. So while it can be hard to stay present during every moment of the day while working, doing so can help to ensure that you don’t absentmindedly make a mistake that could result in an injury.

To help you in doing this, try to have a running checklist in your mind of what you’re doing and what you need to keep your surroundings safe. This can include things like being careful where you’re walking, doing the proper steps for each process you’re completing, and watching carefully when you’re using tools.

Only Do What You’re Comfortable With

As you’re just getting started working construction, you should try to only do things that you’re comfortable with. While it’s good to try new things, if you ever start to feel like you’re not ready or prepared or safe when doing something, you should find someone else who can do this part of the job. Then, you can get training on how to do this in the future so that you can become more comfortable with any projects you’re asked to take on.

If you’re working on a construction site and you’re worried about how to best stay safe in this environment, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you in doing this.

Everybody makes mistakes, including while you’re at work. But while making a mistake in your personal life might complicate things for you sometimes, making a mistake at work can sometimes cost you your job. Luckily, there are things you can do to help admit to your mistake or the mistakes of others in such a way that your position in your company is protected and your boss doesn’t take everything out on you.

To help you see how this can be done, here are three tips for breaking bad news to your boss so that you don’t lose your job.

Get Yourself In The Right Headspace

As soon as you know that there is bad news to break to your boss, be it that you just noticed that you’ve been doing a process wrong for a while or you see that a big piece of machinery like a commercial chiller needs to be repaired, you should make sure that you get yourself in the right headspace before broaching this topic.

When people fear having tough conversations, they might find that they go into these conversations feeling very uneasy, timid, and emotional. But if you’re wanting to be able to hold your own in front of your boss, you’ll have to get these emotions in check. So if you have to go through the conversation in your head so that you can know how you share what you need to share without letting it get the best of you, do this beforehand so that when you speak with your boss, you’re ready to speak and think clearly.

Be Direct

Although you might be nervous about how your boss will respond when you give them this piece of bad news, what can make the situation worse is if they feel like you’re withholding things from them or aren’t being direct. You know that your boss is busy, so wasting their time trying to beat around the bush could just make things worse than if you’d just come right out and say it. So while you might think you’re softening the blow by easing into the bad news, it’s often just best to get right to the point so you can quickly move forward.

Bring Them Options For Solutions

In the most ideal of circumstances, along with bringing your boss the bad news that you’re having to share, you should also come to the table with some options for solutions to these problems as well. Even if your boss doesn’t wind up using one of the solutions that you brainstormed on your own, seeing that you were thinking ahead for a solution and that you want to do whatever you can to make things right will put you in a more positive light than if you just dumped all the bad news and made it their problem.

If you have some bad news that you’re having to break to your boss, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you be ready for this tough conversation.

The dearth of truck drivers in the United States has grown in importance over the last decade, resulting in stressed supply chains and fulfilment challenges. And as the demand for goods grows, so does the need for truck drivers. As more people purchase various items, more truck drivers are required by various businesses to deliver them from manufacturers to sellers and finally to end consumers.

As a result, truck driving has become a very lucrative profession, particularly for those who cannot afford a college education. If you find truck driving jobs near you then you must understand how it feels to pursue a career in trucking.

1. Earn a 6-Figure Income

You’d be hard-pressed to find another job that pays as much as this one without requiring a college diploma.

While some of our drivers earn as little as $50,000 per year (not exactly pocket change!), the majority of our drivers earn well over $100,000. Some of the highest-paid owner-operators earn more than $150,000 per year.

It is very possible to earn a six-figure salary if you are willing to run for two weeks at a time before returning home for a long weekend.

2. No Shortage of Jobs

Because of the rising demand for everything across the country, the number of truck drivers is in short supply, resulting in a large number of job openings. You can also rest assured that there will never be a scarcity of chances in this field because logistics will always be in as long as products are in demand.

3. Flexible Schedules

You have complete control over your schedule as a truck driver. You have complete control over when you wish to work. This option may differ depending on the company, as some may have set schedules.

Local goods are often transported during the day, which is advantageous if you work locally. This way, unless you want to, you won’t have to work early in the morning, late at night, or on weekends. You can even take a break throughout your travel because your company just cares if you deliver the merchandise on time.

4. Job Stability

It is not worth your time to train for a job you will not enjoy. It’s critical to choose a solid and growing industry, and truck driving is a fantastic option.

Truck driving is a wonderful career choice if you are concerned about job security. Every year, the trucking sector provides millions of dollars to the economy, and businesses are always on the lookout for dependable, qualified, and trustworthy drivers to transport their goods. In the first, middle, or last mile, a trucker may always find work.

5. Insurance

Unfortunately, many job routes do not give profitable insurance package prospects for entry-level employees. You may rest confident that as a new professional truck driver, you’ll have access to medical, dental, and vision coverage right now.

6. Vacations

Did we mention that paid vacations and sick days are included in the package? To accomplish your responsibilities to the best of your ability as a professional truck driver, you must be attentive and healthy. Trucking businesses are aware that vacations are required and that you may become ill at any time.

7. Freedom

One of the most important advantages of being a truck driver is your freedom. You’ll be able to securely traverse the open road rather than being cooped up in a cubicle all day. You won’t have a manager who is always watching your every move or bugging you about your performance. On the broad road, enjoy your independence!

8. Travel The Country

You’ll be able to view new sights and sounds as well as experience new sections of the country while driving down the open road. You’ll travel as you’ve never travelled before, from the majestic mountains to the lovely plains.

Whether you are still young and just trying to figure out what you want to do for work, or are looking for a career change later on in life, finding a career that is the right fit for you can be difficult and stressful. Everyone is different, so the things that will make them happy and fulfilled are going to vary. If you haven’t found your calling yet, don’t worry. It’s never too late. Here are 3 tips for choosing the career that’s right for you.

Think About Your Safety

There are many careers out there that are extremely dangerous and this is something you should remember to think about when deciding what to do for work. Staying safe on the job is important because no amount of pay is worth risking your health or life over. If you do decide on a dangerous job, make sure that it is something you are really passionate about, and that there are safety precautions in place in case any type of accident should happen.

Consider Education

When deciding on a new career for yourself, you’ll have to think about the level of education you may need in order to pursue it. If you will have to go back to school you will need to think about the costs involved with that and whether or not they will be worth it. If the career you are considering is not going to pay very well, for example, you may not want to take out a bunch of high-interest rate student loans and go into debt for it.

At the end of the day, if you really want to do something, you should go for it. Education may be seen as a roadblock or merely a stepping stool along the way.

Play To Your Strengths

Picking a job that values strengths that you possess is a smart idea because it will help ensure a long and successful career that you will more than likely be pleased with. Make a list of things that you feel like you’re good at and also don’t hate doing. On the list, include things you are interested in trying and then give them a go. You never know what types of strengths you possess that you aren’t even aware of yet.

If there’s a strong skill you have, why not turn it into a career and get paid to do it?

Choosing the best career for yourself can be a struggle, but it’s also a very exciting time. There are so many possibilities that it can become overwhelming, but take your time and weigh your options. Hopefully these tips will help you out!

Unsurprisingly, relatively few members of the workforce are truly passionate about what they do. For these individuals, jobs are simply a means to an end, and if given the choice, they’d gladly leave them behind. Still, the fact that many jobs are unfulfilling doesn’t mean that you should remain in a career that provides you with absolutely no personal satisfaction. So, if you’ve come to notice any of the following signs, it may be time to seek employment elsewhere.

Stagnant Wages

With cost of living on the rise all over the country, stagnant wages can place a considerable strain on finances that are already burdened. So, if your employer has consistently refused to provide you with pay increases that are properly suited to the cost of living in your area, you may need to find a new job out of pure necessity. If you’re reasonably happy at your current job, make at least one attempt at appealing to the relevant parties. Should your formal request for a pay increase be rejected, proceed to seek out other opportunities. A sizable portion of Americans are financially insecure, but if a full-time job is insufficient to cover cost of living, it isn’t worth your time or effort.

Stagnant wages often go hand-in-hand with a lack of benefits. So, if you suffer from a disability for which your employer doesn’t currently provide coverage, consider seeking out long term disability insurance plans on your own.

Mistreatment

Unfortunately, mistreatment runs rampant at countless workplaces in the U.S. While there are varying degrees of mistreatment, many employers have no qualms about treating workers as poorly and paying them as little as they are legally allowed to. So, if you’re regularly berated, belittled or singled out at your place of business, it may be time to think about finding another job.

Mistreatment can also come from a number of different parties. For example, while such behavior is often attributed to bosses, it’s hardly unusual for coworkers to engage in it, as well. Additionally, if mistreatment rises to the level of outright abuse or harassment, you may want to consider weighing your legal options. Sometimes, the only way to get employers to take certain behavior seriously is to place them on the receiving end of a lawsuit.

Overwork

Since American culture tends to celebrate overwork, many of us have trouble differentiating between reasonable and unreasonable workloads. However, if your workday doesn’t end when you leave the office and regularly continues well into the night, you’re likely dealing with the latter. These types of workloads make it impossible to maintain any semblance of a healthy work/life balance and can lead to a host of problems pertaining to both physical and mental health. Even if you like what you do, such unhealthy hours are practically guaranteed to suck any and all enjoyment right out of your job.

Lack of Passion

For many of us, jobs are merely a means to an end. Although we don’t particularly enjoy working, we carry on out of necessity, not genuine passion. Still, if you have absolutely no passion for your profession or current employer, a new job may help provide you with the satisfaction you seek. Not everyone is in a position to leave their current job due to a lack of passion, but if you have the educational background, skillset and financial security to do so, seeking out greener pastures may prove well worth your while.

Additionally, continuing your education and earning an advanced degree can effectively pave the way for a more rewarding career. For example, a master of science in accounting degree is likely to boost your employment prospects exponentially.

Although very few of us truly love our jobs, many members of the workforce are able to carry out their job duties effectively and efficiently – with minimal-to-average amounts of professional dissatisfaction. So, while it’s perfectly normal to be fairly lukewarm on your career, you shouldn’t remain in a job that causes you profound stress and/or unhappiness. Depending on your employer, workplace and general attitude towards your job, it may be in your best interest to consider new career paths. If you suspect this to be the case, simply keep an eye out for the previously discussed signs.

With many employees working from home since the pandemic started in 2020, it was always going to be difficult to arrange for those staff members to return to the office. While some prefer the office environment, others have become happy working at home. This poses some questions for businesses such as how to attract and retain employees during 2022.

Facing the Difficulties Ahead

Not all businesses are keen on keeping their employees working from home. Some believe that it stifles creativity and productivity.

However, for the employees looking to go back to the office, they now find themselves with a choice to make.

Return to an office environment that may have been stressful.

Choose to find other employment with a company that will let them work remotely.

This has repercussions for companies not only looking to recruit new people but also retaining those that have concerns.

A study in 2021 found that 1 in 3 employees said they will quit their jobs if working from home ends for their company. So what can employers do?

Look at Employee Benefits

For those companies that don’t want to consider keeping remote working, they will need to look at some of the employee benefits to see if they can persuade staff to stay.

These could include:

Subsidised commuting costs

Flexible working hours

Hybrid working arrangements

Subsidised health and life insurance

These employee benefits may help to keep some of your staff happy and willing to return to the office. However, other factors are also important.

Changing the Mindset of the Team

These may seem like difficult times, but it is also a prime opportunity to look within the company and see if things can be improved.

Review the working terms and conditions to see if there can be better working terms or more flexibility.

Try to encourage a sense of commitment and teamwork if this has been lacking before. You can also address any stress that staff is feeling either from other colleagues or stakeholders.

Can Remote Working Exist in Your Company?

Of course, one other option is to consider if your company can continue with working from home as an option.

It might be that not all job roles are suitable for remote working. However, those that already are, may be able to continue with minor modifications.

This is where you can look at the productivity and creativity that your remote workers have achieved and see if this can be continued.

You can then give your employees the choice of either coming back to the office or remaining on remote working.

Final Considerations

This is a time of unprecedented change for many companies. Some have embraced the new working arrangements, but others either cannot or are reluctant.

Even if you agree to continue remote working, some staff may still decide to leave. However, it is important to look at all the options before deciding on where your company moves from here, and how it will affect your staff.

With these ideas in mind, you will be able to effectively future proof your business, attracting and retaining employees throughout 2022.

Digital protection — firewalls, texts, passwords, and so on — dominates the debate around business security. While all of these factors are significant, companies stand to lose a lot if they do not prioritize physical protection. Workplace and other forms of physical protection policies give your staff the resources they need to protect your data and infrastructure from cybercriminals.

The term “business protection” refers to all that is required to keep a company safe. Firewalls, updates, antivirus apps, and password policies are examples of digital protection. Furthermore, all business protection acquisitions must be implemented, installed, maintained, and monitored to ensure that they remain successful and current. Physical protection is also a part of it. Here are a few pointers to keep your company’s assets safe and your employees safe.

1. Secure Your Facility’s Parking Lot

Between collisions and crimes, parking lots can be a dangerous place. The best way to keep your parking lot safe is by controlling who is allowed to park there. The most secure option would be to install a modular office to serve as a parking lot security booth at the entrance to the facility. This would allow only those with authorization to access the lot. You would have to staff the booth during business hours, but that’s a small price to pay for security and safety.

Also, make sure your lot is well lit in the evening and nighttime hours. This will deter unwanted activity. A camera system may be needed as well to further secure the premises.

2. Use Security Hardware in Your Building

The most well-known method of physical protection for businesses is digital video surveillance. In the case of a physical security breach, having cameras rolling will assist companies in identifying responsible parties, but this is more of a reactive role and might not be as successful as keeping data secure.

Control door entry by having employees enter a code or swipe their badge to enter various locations. Depending on employee access needs, this technology can also limit access to different points of entry. Some employees will have job duties that do not require them to have complete access to every room in the house, just as not all employees require administrator access on online accounts.

3. Use a Security System

The physical protection of your staff and the properties of your company are also protected when you use a security system on a regular basis. Choose a security system that is controlled by a third party so that if an incident occurs at the business, emergency responders are immediately informed. Only workers should be given the access code. You may only need to share the code with one or two workers who arrive first or depart last in some cases. When an employee leaves the organization, the access code must be changed.

4. Train Your Staff

In several ways, workplace security is dependent on workers being educated and trained on how to foster security in their daily roles. It may seem to be easier to place blame on hardware and technology, but with the right preparation, workers may serve as a strong line of defense in protecting sensitive data.

Each employee’s workstation has the potential to be a security breach entry point. Documents left on the desk, and open tabs on the screen will make it easy for an intruder to gain access to your office.

When employees leave their desks, a clean desk policy instructs them about how to store or otherwise protect private papers, binders, and tech devices. Locking down the computer screen, hiding any keys or passwords, and deleting any sticky notes with password information on them are all options.

Another way workers can help protect the company is by keeping an eye out for those who aren’t employees in employee-only areas. A simple greeting such as “Hello, have we met?” or “May I assist you?” can be a great, non-confrontational way to encourage physical protection. This, along with all other security protocols, should be included in your company’s IT security policy.
